Just in time for Spring… A Seed Library

Have you ever seen a Seed Library? We were so excited to see this when we popped into a library . What a wonderful treat!!
.
We were able to pick several seeds to plant and it helped to minimize our cost in buying seeds.
.
Plus it gave the littles an opportunity to pick things that we would not normally buy like a quinoa plant and a few others.
.
We are so happy to see this back in some of the libraries this spring! Have you seen one at your local library?

National Sourdough Bread Day

Happy April and National Sourdough Bread Day … and ofcourse April Fools Day!
.
I am still trying to master the beauty of making Sourdough but I haven’t given up . That’s progress right? And we have managed keeping our starter alive so another victory! Yay!
.
There is something wonderful to the whole process so I keep trying and every time I make it I get a little bit better. What about you? Have you tried a sourdough starter before? Love it or leave it?

Seed Exchange

We went to our very first ever Seed Exchange a few weeks ago. We had no idea what to expect and was more curious to see what it was all about.
.
We showed up closer to the end and was bummed to find out we had missed the raffles so lesson learned.. show up to these as closely to the start time as possible. It also looked like there were tables with coffee and food but we were excited to get to the barn and see what the exchange was all about.

We headed to the barn and oh my! Look at all the seeds that were there! There were soooo many! We loved how they had the envelopes with the stickers for you to label the seeds and the way it was easy to navigate. They also had a separate table with packets of seeds.

We ended up getting almost all the seeds we had on our list for the year as well as many more ! Oh and they were all FREE! We will definitely do more of these and can hopefully contribute some of our own seeds .
Have you ever done a seed exchange? If you are wanting to , check out your local conservation district and see when they will be hosting one.

New Chicks 🐓

Our chicken flock just grew by three more littles 🐣🐓
.
We had planned to get all leghorns but then decided to get this sweet Ameraucana that we named brownie ❤️
.
Sadly we ended up losing Brownie this week as well as one of the leghorns . So hard to lose these little ones and was our first time losing chicks and this was our fourth batch .
.
But there was a sweet reminder in talking to the littles about it this week as we processed through it as a family . In the Bible , we are told that not a sparrow falls to the ground that our Father in heaven doesn’t know about and even with these two little chicks , God knows them ❤️ and the scripture goes on to tell us of how much more our Father in heaven loves us.
.
“Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.”
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭10:29-31‬ ‭ESV‬‬

Harvesting Leeks

We harvested leeks from our garden this weekend and to say I was overjoyed is an understatement! We have tried to grow them before with no results and then this years harvest was amazing!

.

We were able to fill the freezer with chopped leeks to add to one of our favorite soups .. leek and potato.. Yumm!

.

The part of the leek that is generally harvested is the white bulb part, but that left all the leaves and so I wanted to know if I could use those .

.

I was happy to find out they can be used to make stock and there are several recipes where they roasted them. We chose to try adding them to stock.

.

If you have a favorite leek recipe please share in comments ❤️
