The Chain Lakes Loop is one of the most breathtaking hikes in Washington and easily deserves a spot on any Pacific Northwest bucket list. Located in the beautiful Mount Baker Wilderness, this trail offers nonstop views of Mount Baker, Mount Shuksan, alpine lakes, rocky ridgelines, wildflowers, and even offers wild blueberries to snack on during late summer.

The variety of landscapes along this trail makes it feel like several beautiful hikes woven into one unforgettable adventure. It’s hard to believe all of these views are part of the same trail.

We chose to hike the loop counterclockwise after hearing so many recommendations online, and it ended up being a great decision. Going down the steep stairs felt much easier, and the views along the trail were absolutely incredible.

The best time to hike the Chain Lakes Loop is typically July through early October, depending on snow conditions. Here’s what you can expect throughout the hiking season.
Summer
Summer brings vibrant wildflowers, lush greenery, and clear mountain views. This is one of the most popular seasons to visit.
Late Summer
Late summer is especially fun because wild blueberries can often be found growing along portions of the trail. We loved stopping to snack on fresh blueberries while taking in the incredible scenery.
Early Fall
Early fall adds beautiful golden tones to the landscape and cooler hiking temperatures. We hiked in September and it was absolutely perfect!

Chain Lakes Loop Trail ✨
🥾 6.5 miles round trip
⛰️ Approximately 1,820 feet elevation gain
🎟️ NW Forest Pass or America the Beautiful Pass required

One of the best parts of this hike is how quickly the scenery changes.
Along the trail you’ll experience:
- Sweeping mountain views
- Crystal clear alpine lakes
- Wildflower meadows
- Rocky ridgelines
- Forested sections
- Blueberry bushes during late summer & early fall .. they were so plump and delish!
- Reflections of surrounding peaks in the water

There were so many moments that felt almost unreal, especially seeing the sparkling alpine lakes surrounded by towering mountain peaks. Several sections of the trail reminded me of the Enchantments. The granite slabs near the visitor center felt similar to areas along the Enchantments Traverse, and a few of the lakes even brought back memories of Perfection Lake.

It’s incredible that places like this exist. So many moments along the trail reminded us of how creative and magnificent God’s handiwork truly is. From the lush greenery to the surrounding mountain peaks, every part of the hike felt peaceful, breathtaking, and full of wonder.

These views!! Be still my heart!

Along the trail, we passed several beautiful alpine lakes, including Mazama Lake, Iceberg Lake, Hayes Lake, and the Bagley Lakes, each offering unique mountain views and the crystal clear water .

If you’re hoping to turn the Chain Lakes Loop into an overnight adventure, there are designated backcountry campsites available along the trail in the Mount Baker Wilderness.
The official campsites are located near Mazama Lake and Hayes Lake, with campsites marked by posts. Camping is only allowed in these designated areas to help protect the fragile alpine environment.
Camping Information

- 📍 Designated campsites are located at Mazama Lake and Hayes Lake

There are reportedly around eight designated campsites total … four near Mazama Lake and four near Hayes Lake.
Because this is such a popular area during summer and early fall, campsites can fill quickly on weekends, so arriving early is a good idea.
One thing we loved seeing was how beautiful the camping setups looked tucked into the mountains near the lakes. Waking up surrounded by alpine scenery here would be incredible.

Here are a few things we recommend bringing:
- Plenty of water

- Sunscreen
- Trekking poles
